Upgrading legacy phpBB2 forums

As of monday 10th of November we will be contacting phpBB2 forum administrators to set a date for the upgrade of their forums to phpBB3. This upgrade will be mandatory as of February 2009 the phpBB team will no longer release security fixes and updates for the legacy version.

There are a lot of improvements in the new phpBB version that you can check out at the phpBB.com website.

However, as this is a mayor version shift, there are a few points we believe you should consider before deciding to upgrade.

During the upgrade process your current database will be converted and made fully phpBB3 compatible. This includes all database contents, as posts, private messages, users, groups, permissions, ban list, forum configuration, etc.

Emoticons, avatars, rank images, videos and post images will not be converted unless hosted somewhere else. For instance, if you have a post with a picture that has been uploaded to your forum using the upload pic mod, this picture will not be available when your forum is upgraded as the upload pic mod is not phpBB3 compatible. If that picture was hosted at an external image hosting service, it will remain in your post.

phpBB2 mods and styles will not work with phpBB3 though phpBB3 itself includes some of the most popular mods that were available for phpBB2. In addition there is quite a wide range of styles made for phpBB3, among them there are many based in old phpBB styles.

If this is okay with you and you are a forum administrator, make sure you keep current your contact email address as we will be contacting all phpBB2 forum admins within the next few days to agree on a date an time when their forums will be converted.

If your are not contacted within the next seven days, please submit a support ticket at eticket.redius.com
